Ecuador 2001 - The Amazon Rainforest at Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve

The Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador can be experienced both in the Northern Oriente and in the Southern Oriente. In the North, there are more signs of the Western World, with oil drilling and roads near by. In the Southern Oriente, the Amazon is far less disturbed, and at Kapawi you have the perfect chance to visit far from anything other than Primary Rainforest and the Achuar Indians.

The Rainforests are amazing places. Here are some facts to help you appreciate the wonder of the place.

There are 526 bird species that have been recorded at and around Kapawi. We were not particularly trying to build a massive list - but in a casual week we spotted 136 of these. Here is our list.

We were fortunate to be able to spend a whole week at Kapawi - deep in the Southern Oriente. Here we were 20 days' hike from the nearest road or town. This is the story of our stay.

Here is a single gallery of our photographs from the Amazon area. There are less than we would have liked, as the extreme lack of light in eh Rainforest is very limiting - and the depth of field is always small. However, these images capture our stay at Kapawi.
